Project Abstract

Despite the development of methods for measurement of body temperature there remains a need for a user-friendly, comfortable, and non-invasive device for continuous measurement of central temperature. Here we report the development of a non-invasive continuous temperature measuring device and the identification of an anatomic passage, identified as a Brain Temperature Tunnel (BTT), which bypasses the insulating thermal barriers surrounding the brain. The BTT provides a thermal connection between a small area of skin by the eye to a central area in the brain. This finding has permitted the creation of electronic devices to measure non-invasively the temperature at the BTT.

Comparative analysis between monitoring temperature at the BTT and conventional temperature monitoring was also performed. Continuous measurement of temperature at the BTT was comparable to invasive methods for measurement of core temperature. Thermal distribution and mapping of the BTT area was done using a specialized thermographic system and customized contact sensors.
